Local Cannabis Companies Give Back – Pacific San Diego

pac-kb-pure-cbd-oil-20180402-002

Mankind Dispensary, and many other cannabis companies, work hard to be a positive force within the communities they serve. Recently Pacific San Diego ran an article on the challenges some companies face in giving back to the charities in our own back yards. Mankind’s very own Cathy Bliss spoke to Pacific San Diego about the work Mankind has done. You can read about it below and then head out to their website to read the entire article.

Cathy Bliss, director of community outreach at dispensary Mankind Cooperative, isn’t surprised schools rejected Brun’s donations. Existing laws state cannabis companies cannot operate near schools and must childproof products’ packaging.

“We’re trying so hard to keep cannabis … away from kids unless it’s for a medical purpose,” said Bliss. “It makes sense to me why some of the schools might not want to be associated.”

Bliss hasn’t experienced an incident like Brun has, but said a veteran-based nonprofit told Mankind they couldn’t work with them at the moment. Bliss said their reasoning was unclear, but overall finds that the majority of groups want to partner with Mankind on philanthropic work.

Participating in charity work gives Mankind more visibility in the community, said Bliss. She points to Mankind’s sponsorship of a neuroscience conference for the Autism Tree Project Foundation as one example. Many parents approached Bliss at the conference to inquire about cannabis’ potential benefits on autistic children.

“It was overwhelmingly positive,” said Bliss. “The fact that we had sponsored it and I was there; I think that gave a lot of people access.”

Cannabis & The Holiday Munchies

Mankind’s Guide To The Holiday Munchies

holiday-munchies-300x200

Food Glorious Food

The holidays represent a trying time for people. The stress of travel, shopping, and even being around family can take its toll on the body in a number of ways. One of the most obvious is in the increase in appetite.

Within the health and fitness community it is widely understood that most individuals will fall off from their nutrition and health regimens during the Holidays. During this time we experience less control over what we eat both in quantity and quality. Between family gatherings where food is prepared en mass, to the perils of airport available options for snacking, even the most diligent nutrition and fitness junkies have been known to experience some additional padding around the mid section. But, believe it or not, the transverse is true as well.

People may not think it is possible but the added anxiety around the holidays can often lead to a lack of appetite as well. Even for those that seem to take the holiday season in stride there may be less interesting food options upon arrival at various holiday parties which can in turn lead to a decrease in hunger. So how can cannabis help with the holiday munchies, or lack thereof? We asked Rob to shed some light on the topic for us and as always he was more than happy to oblige.

Endocannabinoid And The Digestive Tract

The endocannabinoid system is widely distributed throughout the entire body. It is located in the brain, immune system, spleen, GI tract, liver, pancreas, stomach, skeletal muscles, and fat tissue. Receptors from the endocannabinoid system act on every major organ of the digestive system. This system is deeply involved with your bodies metabolism and plays a major role in appetite. First let’s look at the how it impacts the brain, since this is the drivers seat of the whole thing

The hypothalamus is a region of the brain responsible for controlling appetite. It does so by regulating the secretion of two different hormones: ghrelin and leptin. The hormone ghrelin stimulates appetite and increases the feeling of hunger. Leptin on the other hand, creates the sensation of satiety, of being full.

The neural circuit in the hypothalamus that regulates ghrelin is stimulated by CB1 receptors. This is how the chemical THC is able to create such powerful hunger cravings. It is so effective, in fact, that a pharmaceutical company designed a CB1 blocker as a diet pill to control appetite. Despite it’s effectiveness as an appetite suppressant the cannabis related drug never reached approval due to the psychological effects the drug produced.

The Dual Life Of CBD

It turns out though that CBD happens to be an incredibly effective CB1 blocker. In animal studies rats given CBD ate much less food than the control rats. Additionally, CBD has been shown to increase leptin levels, which as we mentioned earlier are responsible for the feeling of satiety, or being full. So then CBD is a good appetite suppressant right? Well not so fast.

The flipside is that CBD is a powerful anti-inflammatory agent, and for people with appetite issues stemming from inflammation such as Chron’s disease, reducing inflammation usually means increased appetite and ability to digest. So it isn’t exactly accurate to say that CBD will work as a suppressant in everyone, as it could very easily end up doing the opposite for some people.

Sugar For The Win…

There is some research that shows THC-V to be an effective appetite suppressant, but it’s such a rare cannabinoid that finding a strain with a high enough content to be effective is like winning the lottery. Since we all know that winning the lottery has less chance of happening than being struck by lightning we will stay away from any discussion involving THC-V.

Research shows one of the effects ingesting cannabis has on the human system is a marked decrease in blood sugar. Researchers have also found that marijuana users have lower fasting insulin levels compared to non-users. What does that mean? Well the first reaction your body will have to it’s sugar levels dropping is a quick jolt of hunger in an effort to regulate those levels back to normal. An easy way to combat this and put the brakes on the onset of the munchies involves fruit juice. Drink fruit juice before you consume and you will lower the chance of those maniacal munchies. You know the ones that have you eating a whole bag of hot Cheetos while watching TV with the family. Or going for fifths and sixths at that holiday family buffet table. But why juice you ask?

Fruit juice specifically, coming from fruit, has a naturally high sugar concentration due to the fructose levels found in fruit. When fruit is juiced down those fructose levels don’t disappear, instead they are paired down with the juice itself giving fruit juice it’s high sugar concentration. Ever looked at the sugar content of Naked Juice? Pretty up there.

Most people may shy away from juices like this due to the amounts of sugar they contain. However if you are truly trying to avoid an onset of the munchies this is a fast, easily digestible way to get your insulin levels up. Thus you will avoid the insulin drop that comes with the ingestion of cannabis. It is also much healthier than eating a large snickers bar or a dozen donuts. After all its that kind of behavior we are looking to avoid.

But I Like Food

Now if you are looking to increase your appetite then the solution is much much simpler. Don’t take down any sugary drinks right before you consume your cannabis for the day. The drop in your insulin levels that occurring after you partake will spike that desire to eat. It won’t be long before you find yourself ready to dig in at the dinner table. Furthermore the right strain will aid in feeling more relaxed. A welcome release from all the holiday travel and anxiety that can get piled on during this time of year.

Want to know the best strains for anxiety relief, digestion, and inflammation? Stop in at Mankind Dispensary and speak to one of our insanely awesome Bud Tender crew. Mankind offers a number of different strains and products to get you just right for the holiday. So enjoy a relaxed, calm, peaceful time this holiday season.

Why Do Edibles Have A Different High?

Mankind’s Reference Guide To Understanding Edibles

To Eat Or Not To Eat – The Edibles Dilemma

Ever notice that consuming cannabis edibles is a drastically different experience than smoking cannabis? Or maybe you are a long time cannabis smoker and are “canna-curious” about trying edibles. With the legalization of recreational cannabis in California more and more people are turning to it’s use for a variety of reasons. One thing some of these newer consumers are looking for is alternative ways to consume it.

Maybe you enjoy the calming effects of cannabis, but don’t want to smell like it at social functions. Then there’s the benefits to cannabis use in the professional realm as well. Many creative professionals utilizes various strains of cannabis to help them in their day to day work. Or you might have kids at home and you would rather not smoke around them. In that case edibles present a great alternative. The issue is though that people can have a vastly different experience consuming cannabis than they do smoking it. That is where Mankind comes in.

Mankind Dispensary’s staff is full of self-proclaimed “science nerds” and longtime cannabis professionals. When we asked them to explain for everyone why consuming edibles is so much different than smoking cannabis a couple were kind enough to kick some science your way. Here’s what the team had to say.

Smoking And THC

When you smoke marijuana, THC gets sucked into your bloodstream via the alveoli in the lungs, but  THC is an oil-soluble compound, meaning it doesn’t break down well in blood, which is mostly water. So within seconds, it looks to bind with the endocannabinoid receptors in the body, never really having a chance to be metabolized by the gastrointestinal tract. But when you ingest cannabis, your saliva immediately starts to break down that THC. Once it hits the stomach and then the liver, it becomes 11-hydroxy-THC. What is 11-hydroxy-THC? It’s one of the dozens of cannabinoids we’ve been able to study. Interestingly enough, it does not naturally exist in the cannabis plant. Rather it is formed within the human body after the ingestion of THC.

What is especially interesting about THC metabolites is that their levels in your body can be more than 10 times higher if you take cannabis in an edible form rather than through other routes. This accounts for the biggest difference between edibles and smoking. With edibles, a much larger fraction of Delta-9-THC makes it to the liver before being broken down. The liver is where it gets converted to 11-hydroxy-THC. If you smoke or vape, the conversion ratio is negligible. There really isn’t enough research available for review on 11-OH-THC, other than what amounts to scientists having injected people with Delta 9-THC and 11-OH-THC in varying levels and recording their response. What we can review says 11-OH-THC can have effects described as “psychedelic and highly intoxicating in high doses”.

Too Much Of  A Good Thing

Essentially when science references “highly intoxicating” we assume they are referencing stories of people calling an ambulance for themselves and sleeping for 14 hours. Something that occurs after eating an entire 500mg edible. Not something any experienced, wise cannabis connoisseur would recommend doing. It is important to note the actual lethal levels for cannabis, called an LD50 rating, would require a 175 pound man in good health to ingest somewhere around 53 whole grams of pure THC. (53000mgs for those who paid attention in math class.) In just about any commercially available edible if you consumed the necessary amount the sugar or salt would actually kill you first. Salt and sugar both have a lower LD50 than cannabis. (It’s possible to get decarbed wax in a high potency and consume 53 grams of it. It wouldn’t be an easy thing to accomplish however.)

Indica, Sativa, Hyrbid – What Is What?

As for edibles being considered Indica, Sativa or Hybrid…there’s some room for debate. When referring to the starting plant material you can definitely classify what the origins of the cannabinoids are. However, does that really matter when judging what the effects will be? When decarboxylation and processing the plant material into an edible, most times, a good amount of the complex terpene and cannabinoids are lost. A large portion of edible producers are using cannabis distillate as to avoid giving the edible an unpleasant “weedy” flavor. What makes the edible feel sleepy or not has more to do with your metabolism and the environment you took it in, along with the presence of compounds like CBN to help sleep along.

Eat Right, Eat Smart

There’s still so much science has to uncover in the cannabis world. Until cannabis is completely decriminalized we can’t understand every last complexity. That doesn’t mean that there aren’t lots of smart people out there working every day to learn what we can, with years of professional experience behind them. As they say, a little knowledge can go a long way. The first piece is understanding how your body reacts to the different ways you ingest cannabis. Edibles are much different, as we can see, than inhalation. When done right it is a great way for people to partake in something that has a ton of benefits to it.

If you are unsure how much to take of an edible the smartest thing you can do is ask your bud tenders next time you are in. These are folks who live cannabis daily. They immerse themselves into understanding how to safely consume it in all of it’s forms so that you don’t end up sleeping for 14 hours or freaking out. Cannabis is being used not only for medical purposes, but also to help people unwind from long days at the office. It aids in relieving anxiety, recovering from athletic training, enhancing work productivity, and socializing. Learn what works for your needs, talk to a professional, and enjoy the lifestyle enhancing effects of cannabis. You’ll be glad you did.

The Mankind Cannabis Food Drive

Mankind Cannabis – Feeding The Community

The Holiday’s are coming up fast. It is a time of reflection and gratitude. At Mankind Cannabis we have a lot to be grateful for. Amazing friends and family. Our health, and the ability to help so many others with theirs. Truly we feel that our lives are filled with so much, yet there is so much more out there that can be done to aid our fellow man. So we decided to hold a Mankind Cannabis Food Drive to feed those that struggle to feed themselves. We realize this is just as important of a topic to our community as it is to us so we wanted to give you a chance to help out, and give back some gratitude for those that do.

Giving and Receiving

So how does the food drive work? Glad you asked. We’ve kept it simple so follow along (if you get lost there is a chance to ask questions late…ok not really but we did make it super simple):

1. First you can bring in non-perishable food items. These include boxed meals, canned items, anything that is not fresh fruit, meat or veggies, or requires refrigeration. Think of things that are filling and easy to make. (Did you know spaghetti and sauce are non-perishable? Yep, you can provide a meal with two items, pretty cool.)

2. Second you can choose a meal bag from a list in the store. These bags provide a complete meal and are often feeding families.

3. Get something back for your good deed.

It is just that simple. So what do you get in return? You mean other than that deep seeded glowing feeling in your soul achieved by helping your fellow man? Well if you donate non-perishable items we will give you $5 off any purchase of $25 or more. For picking a meal bag off the list you get $10 off any purchase of $25 or more. Just our way of saying thank you for helping your fellow man.

Making A Difference

San Diego is a wonderful place to live. Filled with sunshine year round and beautiful beaches. Still there are people that struggle in this great city daily to simply survive. That is why Mankind Cananbis is helping by donating all the food received to the San Diego Food Bank.

The Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank comprises the largest hunger relief organization in San Diego county. On average the food bank serves 370,000 people per month in San Diego County. There are almost a half a million people in San Diego County facing food insecurity daily. By donating to the Mankind Cannabis Food Drive, now through November 20th, the cannabis community can have a huge impact on those numbers.

Help us make an impact on our home. Come down to Mankind Cannabis today at 7128 Miramar Rd, San Diego, bring food or sponsor a meal bag, and leave feeling good in more ways than one.
